BLOGMAS #22: FAVORITE CHRISTMAS CHARACTER
This one may seem out of left field, but bear with me.
1. Sofia the First is one of my favorite kids shows. My twins have been nuts for it since they were about 18 months old, and the whole family actually enjoys it enough that we get excited for new episodes (we've even been role-playing and anxiously awaiting Elena of Avalor's debut!).
2. Winter is voiced by Alyson Hannigan, who is one of the most genuine and talented actresses in Hollywood.
3. Winter is a satyr, making them gender ambiguous. This is perfectly in line with the inclusivity of Sofia the First. Yes, it is still centered on the white experience, and no, it hasn't truly addressed the LGBTQ experience. It's not perfect, but I do love the efforts they've made with regard to race and gender identity.
4. For those who haven't seen this episode from Season 2, Sofia stumbles upon Winter, who has been cursed by a witch. Essentially, the witch is weary of people bringing her things in exchange for wishes and she uses their desires against them. In Winter's case, they can longer touch anyone or anything without gloves.
5. All Winter wants is to be able to hug their family again.
This episode gets me right in the feels every time. I've seen a lot of holiday specials, and honestly I didn't think anything could beat the Holiday Armadillo on Friends, but seeing the way our littles get pulled in and root for Winter, then cheer when they finally get to hug their family is amazing.
So, Winter is my favorite Christmas character. Who's yours?
